The length of flu symptoms is reduced by an average of four days when elderberry extract is taken within 48 hours of the commencement of the influenza A or B virus, according to a 2004 study that was published in the Journal of International Medical Research.
Elderberry extract was administered four times daily at a dose of 175 milligrams to H1N1 and avian flu patients in a 2009 study that was published in the Online Journal of Pharmacology, and the results showed a significant improvement within 24 hours.
In particular, the patients’ muscle discomfort, headaches, fever, and nasal congestion were significantly relieved within 24 hours. Researchers found that within 48 hours of treatment, 90% of elderberry extract-treated individuals either had no symptoms at all or had minor ones.
According to a 2016 study published in Nutrients, elderberry can shorten the duration and symptoms of a cold in travelers. Specifically, it was used by travelers from 10 days before departure until four to five days after arrival abroad, and it cut the length of their cold symptoms by two days.
