Four specialists did a study that supported the harmful effects of prolonged sitting as follows:

  1. Sitting in front of a computer for long periods of time with improper posture strains the neck and cervical vertebrae, causing back pain as well as shoulder and neck problems.
  2. Constant daytime sitting increases the risk of heart disease, weight gain, colon cancer, and other diseases.
  3. It decreases blood flow to the legs, causing blood to pool around the ankles and cause varicose veins and blood clots.
  4. Sitting for an extended period of time causes the glute muscles to weaken and become stiff, which leads to muscle degeneration.
  5. Sedentary lifestyles result in uneven disks, stiff spines, herniated lumbar disks, and back discomfort when collagen builds up around the tendons and the disks become damaged.
  6. Spending too much time sitting during the day reduces the amount of oxygen and blood flowing to the brain, which affects our ability to think properly.

Dr. Edward R. Laskowski advocates standing rather than sitting whenever possible throughout the day since he concurs that less sitting results in improved health.

Additionally, he recommends standing when on the phone, walking with coworkers to meetings rather than sitting in the conference room, and even purchasing a standing workstation. Additionally, he claims that it would be advantageous to place the work table above a treadmill.
