The participants were urged not to consume the cherry juice for two weeks after drinking it twice a day for two weeks. Following the absence of juice, the subjects were given a placebo drink twice a day for two weeks.

Surprisingly, at the end of the study, it was discovered that, as compared to the placebo, people who drank the cherry juice were able to receive an extra 84 minutes of sleep every night.

What makes this possible? Cherry juice, it turns out, contains melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan, both of which induce sleep.

According to Frank L Greenway, coauthor of the study and director of the outpatient research clinic at Louisiana State University’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, the red pigments in tart cherry juice contain an enzyme that helps to minimize inflammation and break down tryptophan, allowing this sleep-inducing compound to last longer in the body. And, as it happens, Montmorency cherries have a high concentration of these chemicals.
