Actually, thieves oil is a combination of other oils, and its name has a fascinating origin.
Due to the potent antiseptic, antibacterial, and antimicrobial characteristics of essential oils, merchants utilized this oil as a remedy against the Black Plague during the Middle Ages.
Gary Young discovered that there are 17 different versions of the “Story of Thieves” that use various ratios of various oils when he examined the capabilities of essential oils in the early 1990s.
In order to develop the ideal mixture for daily use, he chose to research the background of the “Thieves” who inspired the name of the mixture.
A gang of traders and merchants known as “The Thieves” traveled around Europe in the 15th century, bringing spices like cinnamon and cloves from India. However, the bubonic plague stopped international commerce and trade, so they had to find another source of income. They made the decision to steal the plague-infected bodies and make money from the sales of the clothing, jewelry, and accessories by exchanging them for cash and food.
However, because they were aware of the medicinal benefits of spices, they utilized concoctions of oils, vinegars, and spices to prevent illness.
To understand their secret for maintaining their health, the King discovered their practice and apprehended them; they had to reveal it or risk being roasted at the stake. The rest is history; as they revealed the mixture, word of the dish swiftly spread.
The identical story is also told by functional medicine-trained naturopathic doctor Dr. Sarah LoBisco:
“According to the tradition, four bandits who were prowling around the homes of plague victims in France were shielded from getting sick by a mixture of several herbs, most frequently cinnamon, eucalyptus, rosemary, clove, and lemon. Their freedom was won by revealing to the King that the herbal vinegar, which they drank and sprinkled on themselves every two hours, had been their saving grace.
Through the years, various iterations of this formulation have been passed down. To prevent infections on his presidential body, Thomas Jefferson reportedly enjoyed a version of vinegar loaded with lavender, rosemary, sage, wormwood, rue, mint, and garlic.

The immune system can be strengthened by thieves oil, which also aids digestion, purifies the air, and can be used around the house as a cleaning agent. Its advantageous attributes are a result of the potent therapeutic capabilities of the essential oils it contains.
Dr.LoBisco explains:
”Essential oils are secondary plant metabolites that can be mechanically or steam-distilled from aromatic plant material. Due to the subsequent change of chemical elements from the solvent residues, oils generated using chemical solvents are not regarded as authentic essential oils.
Plants create these potent chemicals to protect themselves from pests, control immunological response, and stimulate diverse biochemical pathways essential for survival. Their components can influence cellular pathways in a way that modifies metabolic reactions and improves physiological performance. It has been shown that essential oils can limit the growth of microbes, act as antioxidants, support hormones, and reduce inflammation.
Through skin application, ingestion, or inhalation, essential oils are easily taken into our bodies and quickly eliminated, primarily through the kidneys. When utilized in their correct, pure state, they exhibit a minimal toxicity profile.
