We all have a dozen activities that make up our daily routine, from frequent teeth brushing to coffee drinking at 11 am. Many behaviors are good and beneficial, including going to the gym and even smoking cigarettes on a daily basis or ordering pizza regularly-negative or even harmful.
There are also apps that can help you create new habits or get rid of bad ones, many of which are supposed to take 21 days.
This issue comes from a popular book by plastic surgeon Maxwell Maltz from the 1960s, “Psychoanalytics,” which noted that patients need 21 days to get used to the new look.
But following the results of a 2009 survey, the time needed to shape habits cannot be specified.
Researchers at University College London studied 96 new habits over a 12-week period and found that the average time needed to adopt new habits was 66 days.
They pointed out that the individual adoption of new habits ranged from 18 to a whopping 254 days.
In other words, if you want to adopt a new habit, you need to spend at least two months and you should not be anxious if it fails in three weeks because most of the respondents actually did not have sufficient time.
Every good, bad or insignificant behavior starts with a psychological pattern called a “dress loop.” It’s a series of three pieces.
The first of these is an activator that allows the brain to behave in a certain way.
The second part is the behavior itself, the routine that is created, while the third part is the reward, that is, what the brain likes and remembers.
It is difficult to break down once the habit is developed primarily because we forget how it is done at all, because we are already slaves to the habit we practice.
